Breakspear, which is based in the Chipperfield / Bovingdon area, was established over
50 years ago and has a total of between 70 and 80 members. Our catchment area is wide and varied, including both the local surrounding area and stretching as far as areas such as NW London, St Albans and Luton.
Membership: members can join when they reach the age of 17.
We organise training in all disciplines, occasional lectures and demos, and our
teams participate in many competitions in the fields of dressage, show jumping,
eventing and cross country. We organise regular dressage competitions that are
open to members and non-members alike.
If you are interested in joining the club then please contact Julie Gordon whose details can be found on the committee page. Alternatively, a copy of our membership form is available on-line.
If you have any suggestions for the club such as how we can encourage people to help or how we can improve the website then please let us know. Also if you think of anything in addition to the scheduled events that you would be interested in then get in touch.

History of Breakspear Riding Club, by Mr
John Gosheron (President) |
|
Breakspear Riding Club, which was founded by
Bull Barnes, John Marshall and Bubbles Campbell, celebrated its 50th
anniversary in 2006. In the early
days, the club used to run shows on the Borders Rugby Club ground at
Harefield. In 1972
Bob Old built Park Farm school of Riding in Northwood, which eventually
became the largest local riding establishment, with almost 100 horses stabled
there, including many of the Breakspear members. Bob Old, our then President, gave us
permission to run unaffiliated show-jumping competitions in the school on a regular
basis. These were extremely well supported, and as a result, Breakspear
became very popular with other clubs in the area. The shows continued until
the school closed in 1985.
In the 70's and early 80's, the Lancia
Motor Company and Everest Double Galzing ran their show-jumping
championships at Park Farm and, as these shows were televised, it gave us
the opportunity of seeing all the top riders and horses in the country. They
were of course very popular with the spectators as well, who almost filled
the 600 seat school. During the summer months, Breakspear ran shows on a
field owned by Bob Old in Home Farm Rd. When the farm was eventually sold,
Breakspear began to run events at his farm in Batchworth Heath. At this time
we had a very strong junior section, with many of the members coming from
the West Middlesex Branch of the Pony Club.
After Park Farm closed, our riding club
activities moved to the Berkhampstead area, where many of the committee
now reside. Our members concentrate on cross
country, show jumping and dressage instruction, and the club organises
dressage competitions on a regular basis. |
